diagnosis (Dx)
identification of a disease
protective response of body tissue characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain
tending to become progressively worse, possibly resulting in death
prognosis (Px)
prediction of a possible outcome of a disease
lessening or absence of signs of disease
localized collection of pus
basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
tumor arising from the outer layer of the skin (the epithelial layer)
biopsy (Bx)
removal of living tissue to be viewed under a microscope for diagnostic purposes
decubitus ulcers (bedsores)
open ares of skin caused by pressure or irritation
puffy swelling of tissue from the accumulation of fluid
torn, ragged-edged wound
passageway by which air enters and leaves the lungs
respiratory disease characterized by coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath
chest x-ray (chest radiograph) (CXR)
an x-ray image of the chest used to evaluate the lungs and the heart
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
progressive, irreversible condition characterized by diminished capacity for airflor to and from the lungs
sudden, noisy expulsion of air from the lungs
influenza (flu)
highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract caused by a virus
mucous secretion from teh lungs, bronchi, and trachea expelled through the mouth
tuberculosis (TB)
an infectious disease that affects the lungs (may also affect other organs)
upper respiratory infection (URI)
infection of the nasal cavity, pharynx, or larynx
