- What color should amniotic fluid be?
- clear with white flecks of vernix caseosa in a mature fetus.
- Bilirubin in amniotic fluid -
- Bilirubin is absent at term. High levels indicate hemolytic disease of the fetus in isoimmunized pregnancy.
- Meconium presence
-
Absent except in breech presentation (anoxia).
Presence indicates fetal hypotension or distress. - Creatinine values
-
More than 2 mg/100ml in a mature fetus.
Decrease may indicate immature fetus - less than 37 weeks. - L/S ratio
-
Most common test used for maturity. Should be more than 2.
ex. 2/1=2=probably maturity. 3/1=3=almost absolute maturity.
decrease undicates pulmonary immaturity and subsequent respiratory distress syndrome. - phosphatidylglycerol
- Present after 35 weeks. Absence indicates pulmonary immaturity.
- Glucose
-
less than 45 mg/100ml
Excessive increases at term or near term indicate hypertrophied fetal pancreas and subsequent neonatal hypoglycemia. - Lipids
-
more than 20% of lipid coated cells stain orange.
Decrease indicates fetal immaturity. - alpha-fetoprotein
-
Variable depending on gestational age.
Increases indicate neural tube defects, such as spina bifida or anencephaly, or contamination by blood. - Bacteria
-
Absent
Presence indicates choriamnionitis - Chromosome
-
Normal Karyotype
Abnormal may indicate fetal sex and chromosome disorders.
