the basic unit of living things; cell carry out many function that serve to sustain life
CELL
a lipid bilayer that encloses a cell
cell membrance
the fluid, membrances, and organelles inside a cell, excluding the nucleus
cytoplasm
a structure within a cell, sometimes surrounded by one or more membrances
organelle
acid, the hereditary materical that controls all the activities of a cell, contains the information to make new cells, and provides instructions for making proteins
DNA
the tiny, extremely dense , positively charged region in the center of an atom; made up of protons and neutons; aslo a double membrance-covered organelle found in eukaryotic cells; the nucleus contains a cell's DNA; also the solid center of a comet as it
nucleus
single-celled or many-celled organisms whose cells have a nucleus and organelles surrounded by a membrance
eukaryote
an organism that consists of only one cell that does not have a nucleus of any other membrance-covered organelles, also called a bacterium
prokaryote
a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrance and provides support
cell wall
a web of proteins that helps with cell support and movement
cytoskeleton
the organelle that makes proteins
ribosome
an organelle composed of membrances that produces lipids, breaks down substances, and packages proteins for delivery out of the cell
endoplasmic reticulum
organelles surrounded by two membrances; mitochondna break down food molecules to make ATP
mitochondria
an organelle found in plant and algal cells; the organelle in which photosynthesis occurs
chloroplast
the organelle that modifies, packages, and transports materials out of the cell
Golgi complex
a membrance-covered compartment
vesicle
a vesicle found in animal and fungal cells; lysosomes digest food particles, wastes, and foreign invaders
lysosome
a vesicle found in plants and some protists; vacuoles hold water
vacuole
a group of similar cells that work togather to perform a specific job in the body
tissue
a combination of two or more tissues that work togather to perform a specific function in the body
organ
a group of organs that work togather to perform body functions
organ system
anything that can independently carry out life processes
organism
the shape of part of an organism and the material that part is made of
structure
the job a part of an organism does
function
