Interval

Differences between values are meaningful, but there is no natural starting point. Ratios are meaningless.  0 does not mean nothing.

Example: Temperature (0*F is not without temperature)

Nominal

Categories only. Data cannot be arranged in an order.

Example: Gender (male/female)

Ordinal

Categories can be ordered. Differences cannot be determined or they are meaningless.

Example: Pain levels

Ratio

Like interval level, but there is a natural zero starting point.  Ratios are meaningful.

Example: Price ($0 means no cost, $10 is twice $5)
