- Conservation
- The act of protecting from loss or depletion
- Population
- Group of individuals that mate with one another and produce viable offspring
- Species
- Groups of individuals that is morphologically, biogeochemically, physiologically distinct from one another, OR cannot breed with individuals of other groups; can be one or more populations
- Community
- All the populations living and interacting within a particular geographic area make up a biological (or biotic) community
- Ecosystem
- The living organisms in a community together with their nonliving or abiotic environment make up an ecosystem. Large variation in scale.
- Ecosystem function
- The interactions between organisms and the physical environment, such as nutrient cycling, soil development, water budgeting, and flammability
