Axial Skeleton
Longitudinal axis of the body composed of: the skull, the vertebral column and the bony thorax
Composed of the cranium and facial bones
Composed of 8 bones: Frontal bone, Parietal bones, Occipital bone, Sphenoid bone, Ethmoid Bone, Temporal bones
Frontal Bone
Forehead, bony projections under the eyebrows, superior portion of eye orbits
Parietal Bones
Paired, Superior lateral walls of cranium
Temporal Bones
Inferior to parietal bones
Occipital Bone
Posterior bone of the cranium, forms floor and back wall of skull
Foramen Magnum
large opening in the base of the occipital bone
Occipital Condyles
on each side of foramen magnum, rest on first vertebra of spinal column
Sphenoid Bone
butterfly-shaped, spans width of skull
Sella Turcica
depression in Sphenoid Bone that holds pituitary gland in place
Ethmoid Bone
anterior to sphenoid bone, roof of nasal cavity and part of medial walls of eye orbits
Facial Bones
14: Maxillae, Palatine Bones, Zygomatic Bones, Lacrimal Bones, Nasal Bones, Vomer Bone, Inferior Conchae, Mandible
